The Secret to Losing the Baby Weight – Part 2

The Secret to Losing the Baby Weight – Part 2

Yesterday in The Secret to Losing the Baby Weight Part 1 I shared about my journey to lose the baby weight. As much as I wish that I could offer you a magical secret to lose all of the weight, I can't, because there is no "secret." What I can offer you are some of the tips and tricks that I used to lose all the baby weight. Here they are!

Tips & Tricks to Lose the Baby Weight

1. Exercise

Now I don’t mean hours a day at the gym, I am talking 15- 20 minutes of exercise 3 to 4 times a week. If that seems intimidating to you, then just start off exercising with 10 minute increments and work your way up. Maybe exercising for you means sticking your little one in the stroller and going for a walk. Any exercise is better then none at all. It’s not about the hours or minutes that you put into exercising either, but it’s about making it a part of your routine and being consistent. Now that I have a child, exercising looks a lot different then before; I needed to come up with a new routine. Being a gymnast for 15 years and having a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotions helped me come up with some simple exercises that I could do right at home . Now for those of you who may not have this exercise background and are not sure where to begin, I just launched a new series call “Workout Wednesdays” where I post sample workouts that you can do right from your home. I have found that exercising while my son is awake and playing works best for me. A lot of times he even joins me by either following along with my squats or I use him as added weight to whatever exercise I am doing. To someone else it might be stressful having their child awake or involved with their exercising. You might find that you need the quiet time while your child is napping to exercise. Figure out what works best for you and stick with it!

2. Clean Eating

After my son was born my husband and I drastically changed the way we ate and starting on this Clean Eating way of life. Let me explain what Clean Eating looks like for my family. Basically it means that we eat more fresh fruits, and vegetables and try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible. I could go into a lot more depth about this topic but I will save that for another post. In order for my family and I to “Eat Clean” it has required a lot more work on my part because we are actually eating real homemade food; so naturally it doesn’t happen for every meal everyday, but we are trying.  We started paying attention to the foods that went into our bodies and it is amazing how much crap we ingest that we don’t even realize. We read the labels on the food in our pantry and was disgusted. I never thought twice about those foods before, but when I realized how toxic they were and that I couldn’t even pronounce most of the ingredients I knew that something needed to change. A resource that has helped me along this journey of clean eating is www.thegraciouspantry.com. There is a section called Cleaning Eating 101 that helps give a basic understanding of Clean Eating and will help you get started.

3. Everything in moderation.

If you really want to eat that brownie, go ahead and do it, but don’t eat 5 of them and don’t eat them everyday. If you do splurge, just make sure that you pay attention to the other foods that you eat that day. It’s not about making yourself miserable and never enjoying treats, because that way of living will never last. Every once in a while you have to indulge. Remember that what you eat everyday is more important than what you eat every once in a while.

4. Do not treat eating healthy and exercising as a diet, but rather a lifestyle change.

5. Be Patient with yourself! I cannot stress this point enough.

I am posting this to encourage you in your journey and not to make you feel bad. Don’t look at my story and be discouraged because you aren’t where I am yet. Maybe it will take you two or three times as long to lose the weight. Just BE PATIENT with yourself.

Here are current pictures of me almost 18 months post baby.
